Delhi to Taj Mahal: By Car vs Train – Which is Better?

Delhi to Taj Mahal by train

If you will be visiting the Taj Mahal, your first real choice will be how to get there. Option 1 – by train (from Delhi to the Taj Mahal) or Option 2 by passenger vehicle (i.e., hiring a private car). Although both ways accomplish the same thing, they offer quite contrasting experiences. One is faster and one is more flexible, so it will depend on your group size, travel style etc. as to which is “best” for you.

So here’s a simple comparison between these two options without any guesswork involved.

The Distance and What It Means for Your Day

Agra is approximately 200 km from Delhi. On a good day, when the traffic is light, it would take approximately 3.5 hours to 4 hours (driving time) using the Yamuna Expressway. Whereas, when using the Gatimaan Express (the fastest train on this route) it would take approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes.

If you plan to do a same-day trip, keep in mind that the time difference can be very important. For example, if a train leaves from Delhi to Agra at 8 AM, you’ll arrive in Agra by 10 AM, but if you’re driving and leave at 8 AM, you’re going to be getting there sometime after 12 PM – too late to see the beautiful Taj Mahal after the sun comes up.

Delhi to Taj Mahal by Train: The Gatimaan Express

Taking the Gatimaan Express is a great way for people who are travelling on a budget and want to get from Delhi to the Taj Mahal quickly, without having to spend money on a private vehicle. This train leaves Hazrat Nizamuddin Station in Delhi at 8:10 AM and arrives at Agra Cantt Station at 9:50 AM. It then departs Agra at 5:50 PM and returns to Delhi at 7:30 PM. The price of the train is around ₹505–₹755 (approximately $6–$9) per person, depending on the class.

The train itself is very comfortable with clean AC cars, reserved seats, and a light breakfast served onboard. Overall, it’s much more comfortable than sitting in a car and dealing with traffic!

The Delhi Agra Train Option Beyond Gatimaan

If you’re unable to board the Gatimaan (which fills up rapidly on weekends), the Shatabdi Express is the alternative. The Shatabdi departs New Delhi Station at 6:00 A.M. (arriving approximately 2:30 hours later at 8:40 A.M.), so you can arrive earlier for this trip than by driving yet, still, it will take longer than if you were to drive there yourself.

If you don’t mind travelling slower and paying less for your tickets, you may want to consider taking an Intercity Express train. However these trains are likely to be overcrowded and if it’s your first time travelling to the location then I suggest you use only Gatimaan or Shatabdi Express trains for a comfortable ride.

The Catch with Train Travel

The Agra Cantt train station is approximately 6 km outside of the Taj Mahal. You can use either a pre-paid auto rickshaw or an app based-cab service to get to the Taj Mahal from Agra Cantt (both Uber and Ola operate in Agra); budget around ₹150-₹200 for your transport (15-20 minutes) to the site.

The IRCTC website is fairly easy to navigate but can take a little while longer to make reservations for trains as an International Traveller; be sure to book at least two or three weeks in advance especially if you plan to travel over the weekend or during a holiday period.

Delhi to Agra by Car: Private Transfer

Travel by private automobile is more advantageous than train since it allows complete flexibility and has a door-to-door service with the ability to schedule and stop at any location you desire.

What is the cost?

Private air-conditioned round trip (typically using a vehicle similar to a Toyota Innova) costs around ₹5,000–₹8,000 for the whole vehicle’s rental and not per person (converts to approximately $60-97).

However, if two people share the vehicle’s costs, then it will cost less than each person buying one train ticket. If you are taking a family of four on holiday then it would work out at an even better price per person.

Higher-end cars would be available starting at around ₹10,000 for a premium vehicle such as a Mercedes or Toyota Fortuner, but for a 270 km drive on a highway of about four hours, you’ll find a standard Innova will do what is necessary.

Timing a Delhi Agra Car Trip

If you get to leave Delhi between 6:00 AM and 6:30 AM, you will be able to arrive at the Taj Mahal before it starts getting crowded as it does during lunchtime. The Yamuna Expressway will allow you to drive in an uninterrupted manner; however, once you are out of Delhi, you will have to rely on your knowledge of the Delhi area to navigate the traffic of the city, which will take approximately 45-60 minutes until you are free from it.

A departure time of 6:30 AM will give you a realistic arrival time at Agra of approximately 10:00 AM-10:30 AM. This will yield an excellent window for viewing the Taj (the best viewing conditions occur between sunrise and sunset), and you will avoid most of the midday crowds.

The Flexibility Factor

One of the benefits of traveling by car is that you will have flexibility to stop and see Akbar’s tomb (Sikandra) en route, spend an additional hour touring the Agra Fort if desired, and visit the Baby Taj (Itmad-ud-Daulah) without having to pre-book a return train. For those who are traveling with elderly relatives, young children or people who prefer not to navigate train stations and deal with shared queues, a private car can significantly reduce the hassle experienced when traveling.

Which Should You Choose?

Using the train: If you are traveling alone or as a couple and want to save money then take the train. The auto rickshaw ride from Agra Cantt to the Taj Mahal isn’t a problem for you, and you are comfortable buying your tickets online.

Hiring a private vehicle: If you’re traveling with at least 3 people, hiring a private vehicle is the best option because there will be no cost per person, and the convenience of having your own vehicle goes a long way. This is also true if you are intending to make other stops along the way (Fatehpur Sikri is an obvious stop when heading back toward Jaipur) or if someone in your group becomes distressed by the station logistics.

There are no right or wrong answers. Both options have provided thousands of visitors with great days at the Taj Mahal. Ultimately, your group size and your relative importance of having flexibility or saving time while driving, will dictate your choice.

Taj Mahal by Gatimaan Express: A Few Practical Notes

A few essential facts about traveling on the train:

The train only runs from Tuesday to Sunday, and is inactive on Mondays. Since the Taj Mahal also does not open on Fridays, you can use Wednesday – Sunday as your full schedule.

Tickets will sell out, so reserve tickets on IRCTC as soon as you have settled your travel plans. Consider purchasing the Executive Chair Car ticket for only a little bit more money; it will give you a larger seat and additional personal space.

Hazrat Nizamuddin Station (the departure point) is located in South Delhi near Lodi Colony and Sarai Kale Khan. If your hotel is located at Connaught Place or the New Delhi Station expect to take 30–40 minutes to reach the station. Allow extra time during the morning for traffic congestion.

What About Shared Cabs or Buses?

Sarai Kale Khan terminal in Delhi offers both shared taxis and air-conditioned buses to Agra. They’re low-cost, usually ranging from ₹300 to ₹500 per person, and are a good option when budget is your only consideration. However, there are drawbacks; they operate on their own schedule, drop you at a bus stand (not close to the Taj), and can take between 4-5 hours to get there depending on the number of stops made along the way between Delhi and Agra. If you want to visit Agra for a one-day trip and have a limited amount of time, then this will better suit the traveler with a lot of flexibility in their schedule.

Gatimaan’s timetable is 1 hour and 40 minutes from Delhi to Agra.

The Gatimaan departs Hazrat Nizamuddin Station at 8:10 am, arrives at Agra Cantt at 9:50 am.

Is the train or vehicle a more suitable mode of transport for solitary travellers?

The train provides a better service – faster, cheap and has plenty of space for one person travelling for the day.

Can I reserve a vehicle online while in the USA prior to arriving in Delhi?

You can book a car rental online through Viator or GetYourGuide, and your hotel concierge will usually send you a reservation form.

What is the Gatimaan’s advance return time from Agra back to Delhi?

The Gatimaan will arrive back in Delhi at 5:50 pm. If you miss this train, the Shatabdi’s return time is around 8:15 pm.
